Abstract Line Drawings from 2D Images

Abstract: We present a novel scheme for automatically generating line drawings from 2D images, aiming to facilitate effective visual communication. In contrast to conventional edge detectors, our technique imitates the human line drawing process and consists of two parts: line extraction and line rendering. We propose a novel line extraction method based on likelihood-function estimation, which effectively finds the genuine shape boundaries. We consider the feature scale and the blurriness of lines with which the detail… Show more

“…On the other hand, it is important to recall that relative simplicity can be preferable in a line render on account of its visual-processing advantages, as Son et al (2007) stated. Thus it is clearly important that artists strike an appropriate balance between detail and simplicity.…”

“…Papers [9,10] describe techniques for generation of line drawing pictures from photographs by means of sophisticated edge detection techniques. Various versions of flow-based Difference-of-Gaussians (DoG) with thresholding are considered.…”

“…Computer-generated line drawing is another artistic representation style, aiming at simple yet effective visual communications. Many methods of this kind of rendering are reported recently, such as interactive pen-and-ink illustration [6], suggestive contours [7], apparent ridges [8], coherent line drawing [9] and abstract line drawing [10]. Other technique is for paying more attention to stroke-based rendering (SBR) [11] to simulate hand-painting images.…”
