Accelerated partial breast irradiation with interstitial multicatheter brachytherapy after breast-conserving surgery for low-risk early breast cancer

Abstract: Patients with low-risk invasive ductal carcinoma treated with breast-conserving surgery (BCS) were included in a multicatheter brachytherapy APBI protocol. The primary endpoint was ipsilateral breast recurrence. Between December 2008–December 2017, 186 low-risk breast cancer patients were treated with APBI using interstitial multicatheter brachytherapy and followed prospectively. At 5-years of follow-up, cumulative local recurrence (LR) and cause-specific survival was 1.1% (95% CI 0.3–1.9) and 98.3% (95% CI 97… Show more

“…Interstitial brachytherapy was the first APBI technique that was developed [9]. After results of studies with long term follow up, this technique was accepted in experienced centers as comparable to WBI in terms of efficacy and toxicity [9,10]. Furthermore, there is a novel approach to delivery of APBI-image guided breast brachytherapy that maintains a high level of precision by using breast immobilization via breast compression and image guidance [11].…”

“…The eligibility and exclusion criteria have already been published [ 17 ]. In short, women aged ≥50 years who were affected by early (pT ≤ 3 cm, pN0, M0) breast cancer and who had undergone BCS, an axillary dissection, or a sentinel node biopsy with microscopically clear resection margins were included.…”

“…The treatment protocol has been previously reported [ 17 ]. In short, all patients had interstitial multiplanar implants to effectively cover the clinical target volume (CTV), including both the surgical cavity and a safety margin (at least 20 mm).…”
