Accelerated start‐up and microbial community structures of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification using novel suspended carriers

Abstract: BACKGROUND The integrated free‐floating biofilm and activated sludge (IFFAS) process is an ideal candidate for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). However, traditional carriers have their inherent drawbacks, such as the weak hydrophilicity and negative charges on the surface. In this study, novel carriers with favorable hydrophilicity and electrophilicity were prepared and implemented in an IFFAS‐based SND reactor. RESULTS Compared with traditional carriers, the water contact angle of the nov… Show more

“…At the same time, its surface is relatively smooth, and its specific surface area is relatively small. Moreover, the surface of pure PVC is negatively charged, which is the same as the surface of bacteria [ 6 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. These disadvantages make it difficult for bacteria and microorganisms to attach to PVC biofilm carriers.…”

“…In a recent study, Zhang et In addition to enhanced biofilm formation, the removal efficiencies of target pollutants (i.e. COD, NH4-N, and total nitrogen) in the biofilm reactor with electrophilic modified carriers are assumed to be better than those with unmodified carriers (Mao et al, 2017;Liu et al, 2018b). For example, Liu et al (2018b) found that that a higher amount of attached biomass was observed on modified carriers (PQAS-10 and Fe2O3 modified PE) compared to unmodified carriers (pure PE).…”

For example, Liu et al (2018b) found that that a higher amount of attached biomass was observed on modified carriers (PQAS-10 and Fe2O3 modified PE) compared to unmodified carriers (pure PE). As a result, the removal efficiency of TN, COD, and NH4-N in biofilm reactor with modified carriers was superior to that with unmodified carriers.…”
