The acceleration of very early age cement hydration by C-S-H seeding is getting attention from scholars and field applications because the enhanced early age features do not compromise later age performances. This acceleration could be beneficial for several low-CO2 cements as a general drawback is usually the low very early age mechanical strengths. However, the mechanistic understanding of this acceleration in commercial cements is not complete. Reported here is a contribution to this understanding from the study of the effects of C-S-H gel seeding in one Portland cement and two belite cements at two widely studied water–cement ratios, 0.50 and 0.40. Two commercially available C-S-H nano-seed-based admixtures, i.e., Master X-Seed 130 and Master X-Seed STE-53, were investigated. A multi-technique approach was adopted by employing calorimetry, thermal analysis, powder diffraction (data analysed by the Rietveld method), mercury intrusion porosimetry, and mechanical strength determination. For instance, the compressive strength at 1 day for the PC (w/c = 0.50) sample increased from 15 MPa for the unseeded mortar to 24 and 22 MPs for the mortars seeded with the XS130 and STE53, respectively. The evolution of the amorphous contents was determined by adding an internal standard before recording the powder patterns. In summary, alite and belite phase hydrations, from the crystalline phase content evolutions, are not significantly accelerated by C-S-H seedings at the studied ages of 1 and 28 d for these cements. Conversely, the hydration rates of tetracalcium alumino-ferrate and tricalcium aluminate were significantly enhanced. It is noted that the degrees of reaction of C4AF for the PC paste (w/c = 0.40) were 10, 30, and 40% at 1, 7, and 28 days. After C-S-H seeding, the values increased to 20, 45, and 60%, respectively. This resulted in larger ettringite contents at very early ages but not at 28 days. At 28 days of hydration, larger amounts of carbonate-containing AFm-type phases were determined. Finally, and importantly, the admixtures yielded larger amounts of amorphous components in the pastes at later hydration ages. This is justified, in part, by the higher content of amorphous iron siliceous hydrogarnet from the enhanced C4AF reactivity.

Sulfate-resisting (SR) Portland cement is commonly used in building works to improve concrete’s durability against external sulfate attack. This attack is considered a very serious chemical aggression that causes damage and cracking of concrete structures. These special cements have a very particular mineralogical composition, C3A ≤ 3% and (2C3A + C4AF) ≤ 20%, which makes the cementitious matrix resistant to sulfate attack. This kind of product is very difficult to manufacture since low alumina (C3A) necessitates the use of a high kiln temperature in order to keep a sufficient liquid phase necessary to maintain the stability of the cement manufacturing process. In this context, this study aims to optimize SR Portland cement raw meals using natural materials collected from different regions in Tunisia, mainly ordinary limestone, siliceous limestone, black marl, grey marl, iron ore, and natural fluorapatite. The collected specimens were characterized by an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer in order to determine its elemental chemical composition. The optimization of the SR Portland cement raw meal combinations was done by means of a calculation tool based on the chemical composition of each used raw material and the variation of burning modules (LSF, SIM, and ALM). It has been found that natural fluorapatite integration (0%–15%) in raw mix preparation leads to the raw meals required for the SR Portland cement standard (C3A ≤ 3% et 2 C3A + C4AF ≤ 20%). Moreover, it was shown that the estimated SR raw meals ensure the cement manufacturing process stability (acceptable burning modules “LSF = 100; SIM = 3; ALM = 0.91 and sufficient liquid phase) and decrease the CO2 emissions in cement production.

Environmental pollution is one of biggest challenges facing the world. The promising technology to control this problem is utilization of semiconductor materials as photocatalyst. It is well known that normal TiO2 showing photocatalytic activity in the UV light, so to decrease the band gap and shifting into visible light, titanium dioxide nanotubes was doped with Fe3+ ions. The influence of fabricated Fe‐doped TiO2 nanotubes (Fe/TiNTs) on the hydration of tricalcium silicate (C3S) have been studied. Addition of 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt% and 3.0 wt% of Fe/TiNTs into C3S system significantly accelerated the course of hydration. Study on the hydration products after 8h, 1d and 7d improved the degree of hydration. The enhancing of compressive strength of hydrated C3S after 7d, 14d and 28d was observed comparing to the normal TiO2 nanotubes (TiNTs). Also treating both Fe/TiNTs and TiNTs with supersaturated Ca(OH)2 solution revealed a strong interaction between Ca2+‐ ions and nanotubes particularly in the presence of iron (Fe/TiNTs). The specific surface area of hydration products in the presence of Fe/TiNTs was increased. In this study, isothermal calorimetry was utilized for the course of hydration, x‐ ray powder diffraction (XRD) for the phase composition in combination with simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) and gas adsorption (GA) for measuring specific surface area of nanotubes and hydration products.
