Accessible search and the role of metadata

Abstract: Purpose Some of the usability and accessibility problems of search interfaces emanate from poorly organized search results, where different types of metadata are employed. Metadata is important to make well-informed selection of resources. However, putting too much of it on search interfaces could be counterproductive. Therefore, studies suggest that metadata-related decisions need to be informed by user requirements. The purpose of this paper is to explore library metadata from usability and accessibility per… Show more

“…Past studies revealed digital accessibility problems emanating from interface designs and information architecture (Navarrete and Luján-Mora 2018;Beyene 2018b). In this research, only one participant, who happened to be a master's student and who owned a computer, said to have faced problems such as inaccessible PDFs.…”

“…The search interface design was constructed by combining lines, depth, dimension, organization, symbol, label, text, icon, color and network topology (Nyhan, 2014). The experimental results showed that the query time based on visual interface is much less than it is for text interface (Beyene and Godwin, 2018). Through the design of graphic visualization using node links, attractive layouts and alternative representations, search user interface would be more interactive and effective by reducing the redundancy (Moriyama et al , 2015).…”

“…Other studies pointed out widespread accessibility problems with university websites (Ringlaben, Bray, & Packard, 2014;Ahmi & Mohamad, 2015;Alahmadi & Drew, 2017) and library websites and databases (Riley, 2002;Stewart, Narendra, & Schmetzke, 2005;Byerley, Chambers, & Thohira, 2007;Tatomir & Tatomir, 2012). After indicating the cognitive overload experienced by some library users with disabilities (Ahmed, Borodin, Puzis, & Rama Krishnan, 2012;Theofanos & Redish, 2006), some researchers have remarked on the need for improvements in cataloging practices, metadata, and similar strategies for increasing access to digital library resources (Xie, Babu, Joo, & Fuller, 2015;Beyene & Godwin, 2018).…”
