Accessory roots and root canals in human anterior teeth: a review and clinical considerations

Abstract: Anterior teeth may have aberrant anatomical variations in the number of roots and root canals. A review of the literature was conducted using appropriate key words in major endodontic journals to identify the available reported cases as well as experimental and clinical investigations on accessory roots and root canals in anterior teeth. After retrieving the full text of related articles, cross-citations were identified, and the pooled data were then discussed. Results revealed a higher prevalence in accessory… Show more

“…Based on the results of the present study, the mean of pulp-to-tooth volume ratios in maxillary and mandibular canines was higher than that in other teeth, which is expected by taking account of the anatomy, morphology and the size of canines and the minor effect of irritating factors on secondary dentin formation (18). …”

“…there is a decrease in pulp volume with aging. Such a correlation was stronger in the maxillary central incisors and canines compared to other teeth, which might be explained by less internal anatomical variations in these teeth (18). In addition, it is easier and more accurate to separate the pulpal area in teeth with one root canal with longer dimensions using software techniques.…”

“…In the human dentition, a wide range of anatomical variations in each tooth type has been reported in terms of the number and shape of roots and root canals (Vertucci , Ahmed & Abbott , Versiani et al . , , Ahmed , Ahmed & Hashem ). For many decades, this topic has been the subject of numerous experimental and clinical reports, and it is clear that root and canal morphology vary greatly between populations, within populations and even within the same individual (Vertucci , Ahmed & Cheung , Ahmed , Versiani et al .…”
