Accuracy and workflow of navigated spinal instrumentation with the mobile AIRO® CT scanner

Abstract: The AIRO(®) system is an easy-to-use and versatile iCT for navigated spinal instrumentation and provides high pedicle screw accuracy rates. Although the authors' experience suggests that the learning curve associated with AIRO(®)-based spinal navigation is steep, a systematic user-based approach to the technology is required.

“…1) Although C-arms capable of obtaining 3D images are now available, 3) their imaging range is inferior to that of the multi-axis angiography units. Moreover, reports on the use of the O-arm 5) and mobile CT 16) exist; however, greater interference in the surgical process than that with the C-arm or multi-axis angiography unit is involved. Thus, it is common for surgery to be performed using a navigation system based on an initially captured image.…”

“…The navigation reference device (Brainlab AG, Munich, Germany) was fixed to the head clamp. The navigation camera was set up to allow co-registration of the navigation reference device and the registration fiducials on the iCT gantry or CBCT flat panel detector, similar to the setup for automatic patient/image co-registration in spinal navigation [19]. The iCT or CBCT scan was executed by a CT-qualified technical radiological assistant or a surgeon qualified for performing digital volume tomography, respectively.…”
