Accuracy of positioning data on smartphones

Abstract: This contribution investigates how accurate location information is on smartphones. Our research is based on a data set consisting of 2289 locations gathered from a marketed iPhone application. In a first analysis, it became evident that the accuracy information differs significantly among iPhone and iPod and iPad devices. A second analysis of the accuracy values reveals clusters of accuracy values at above 1 km, at 500 meters, and at an accuracy of below 300 meters. Information with an accuracy of above 500 m… Show more

“…Mobile phone GNSS is comparable to other recreational GNSS units [71], [72]. von Watzdorf and Michahelles [73] determined that different devices, specifically the Apple ® iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, had differences in positional accuracy due to differences in different localization technologies. Zandbergen [69] hardware (all applications were tested using a separate HTC Desire Bravo smartphone) and location.…”

“…The precision and accuracy of mobile devices in determining their geographic position were proved to vary considerably depending on the context (urban areas, rural areas, etc.) [44]. In a detailed experiment on the accuracy of GPS sensors installed on mobile devices, Blum et al show that the location is reported with a precision varying from 10 to 60 meters, depending on the device orientation and type, and, in cities, on the surrounding buildings [3].…”
