Background and Objectives: Growing antibiotic resistance among bacteria is a global issue that is becoming harder and more expensive to solve. Traditional treatment options are becoming less effective, causing more fatal outcomes of nosocomial infections. Since the development of new antibiotics has stagnated in the last decade, a novel approach is needed. Materials and Methods: Graphene-based materials are being developed and tested for various applications, and the medical field is no exception. We tested 98 clinical A. baumannii strains for antibiotic resistance, AMP-C production and the effectiveness of a graphene oxide and silver nanoparticle hybrid nanocomposite. The disc diffusion method was used to determine antibiotic susceptibility results. Antibiotic discs containing cefotaxime, cloxacillin and clavulanate were used to detect AMP-C production. The effectiveness of the GO–Ag hybrid nanocomposite was determined by counting colony forming units (CFUs) after a suspension of A. baumannii and the GO–Ag hybrid nanocomposite was plated on MH agar and incubated overnight to grow colonies. Results: In our research, we found that A. baumannii strains are resistant to the majority of commonly used antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance levels and AMP-C production can be factors, indicating the better effectiveness of the graphene oxide and silver nanoparticle hybrid nanocomposite. Conclusions: In this study, a GO–Ag hybrid nanocomposite was shown to have the potential to fight even the most problematic bacteria like A. baumannii.

Background This six-year retrospective study provides an in-depth analysis of the epidemiological and clinical patterns associated with Acinetobacter baumannii ( A. baumannii ) infections, focusing on age distribution, antibiotic resistance profiles, and specimen types. Aim The research examines the incidence and characteristics of both non-Multi-Drug Resistant (non-MDR) and Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) A. baumannii strains by reviewing patient records from January 2016 to December 2022. Methods Through a statistical analysis, the study highlights the incidence rates across diverse age groups and explores the impact of antibiotic treatment regimens on infection outcomes. Additionally, it identifies the primary clinical specimen types for each strain, noting an association between non-MDR A. baumannii and midstream urine samples, while MDR A. baumannii strains were more frequently found in respiratory, wound, peripheral, and central line swaps/specimens. Results The results indicate that in 2016, non-MDR A. baumannii infections were notably more frequent compared to MDR A. baumannii cases. However, a significant shift occurred in 2021 and 2022, with a marked decrease in non-MDR A. baumannii cases and an increase in MDR A. baumannii infections. Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed that non-MDR strains were commonly tested against cefazolin, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, nitrofurantoin, oxacillin, piperacillin/tazobactam, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. In contrast, MDR strains were frequently tested against amikacin, cefepime, colistin, meropenem, imipenem, and tigecycline. Conclusion This study enhances the understanding of A. baumannii clinical behaviour and resistance patterns, offering valuable insights to support future research and inform strategies for infectious disease management and control.

Background: Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen that causes many infections, including nosocomial infections; this bacterium has a high mortality rate among other bacteria. A. baumannii has an elastic genome that changes rapidly when exposed to harsh environmental conditions, leading to widespread bacterial resistance to various disinfectants and antibiotics. The high ability of bacteria to bind to all surfaces and survive in different conditions has caused the spread of bacteria in various environments. Rapid detection is very important in preventing the spread and even treatment of the infection. Methods: Currently, the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method is the only effective method used for diagnosis, which has some pros and cons. Results and Conclusion: This study aimed to design a new recombinant multi-epitope protein from Acinetobacter baumannii that can be used in ELISA for rapid diagnosis. The unique feature of this study from others is the use of patient serum for antibody monitoring.
