Acquiring and pointing

Abstract: Research literature has shown that pen tilt is a promising input modality in pen-based interaction. However, the human capability to control pen tilt has not been fully evaluated. This paper systematically investigates the human ability to perform discrete target selection tasks by varying the pen stylus' tilt angle through two controlled experiments: tilt acquiring (Experiment 1) and tilt pointing (Experiment 2). Results revealed a decreasing power relationship between angular width and selection time in Expe… Show more

“…Our results are consistent with the lower throughput of angular selection. In a controlled study of pen-tilt interaction with surfaces, Xin et al [58] found a decreasing power relationship between angular width and selection time. Tilt-Type's angular width to change between bins and characters is quite small to reduce the motion needed by the fingers.…”

“…Prior research explored various forms of auxiliary input such as rolling [8,21,23], pressure [11,17,45,46], tilt [21,56,60], and bend [17,18] that go beyond tracking the X-Y position of the pen tip on the screen [8,61]. Pen rolling utilizes the 3D rotation of the pen along its longitudinal axis as an input [8].…”

“…Pen tilt is different than pressure and rolling because tilt can be visually indicated by looking at the angle of the pens barrel relative to the surface of the screen. It is much more difficult to visualize a variable of pressure or the angle at which you are rolling a pen [60].…”
