Free-space optical (FSO) communication is widely used in satellites, ships, aircraft, and ground stations due to its advantages of high speed, large capacity, good confidentiality, and strong anti-interference ability. Variable-beam divergence angle (VBDA) technology makes FSO systems more flexible; this has the benefits of higher acquisition probability, stronger tracking ability, wider communication link range, and lower energy consumption. In other words, the study of VBDA has both theoretical significance and practical relevance. This paper conducts a comprehensive search of relevant scientific databases, journals, conference proceedings, patents, and books to identify publications related to VBDA technology. We analyze these publications, classify and organize various VBDA techniques based on their respective methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review of VBDA technology. In this paper, we first explain the basic principle of changing the beam divergence angle by employing the ABCD matrix, and further furnish a detailed overview of the methods used for VBDA along with their corresponding advantages and disadvantages. In addition, we provide a comprehensive summary of the research conducted using VBDA technology across different link types. Lastly, we identify the challenges and potential future research directions for VBDA technology.

The development of multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) has revolutionized the traditional reliance on a single, costly AUV for conducting underwater surveys. This shift has garnered increasing interest among marine researchers. Communication between AUV fleets is an urgent concern due to the data rate limitation of underwater acoustic communication. Laser-based underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is a potential solution once the link-establishing requirement between AUVs can be met. Due to the limited coverage area of the laser beam, the previous pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) method is to quickly adjust the beam direction and search for the target according to the set scanning path. In response to these challenges, we propose a scalable laser-based link establishment method that combines the maneuvering of the AUV, the acoustic positioning, and the control of the optical system. Our proposed approach has consistently outperformed the existing PAT method in simulated environments, effectively establishing laser links. Importantly, we have successfully implemented our approach in machine experiments, confirming its practical applicability.

Compared with point-to-point wireless optical communication systems, multi-faceted Optical Base Stations (OBSs) offer the advantages of supporting multi-user access and achieving omnidirectional dynamic communication. The emission structure of the multi-faceted OBSs, which offer wide beam coverage and ensure uniform distribution of optical signals, is essential for users to receive signals while in motion. This paper presents a modeling method for three-dimensional beam coverage based on the multi-faceted OBS architecture. Additionally, a Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) algorithm is used to optimize the configuration of the multi-faceted LED array by adjusting the deflection angles of the LED arrays and the emission half-angle of the LEDs at the OBS. These advancements aim to enhance beam coverage performance while also providing technical support for achieving omnidirectional communication in underwater optical wireless networks (UOWN).
