ACR guidance document on MR safe practices: Updates and critical information 2019

Abstract: The need for a guidance document on MR safe practices arose from a growing awareness of the MR environment's potential risks and adverse event reports involving patients, equipment, and personnel. Initially published in 2002, the American College of Radiology White Paper on MR Safety established de facto industry standards for safe and responsible practices in clinical and research MR environments. The most recent version addresses new sources of risk of adverse events, increases awareness of dynamic MR enviro… Show more

“…Moreover, the thoracic tumor tissue is complex, and when benign and malignant tumors exist at the same time, the overlapping effects will interfere with MRI diagnosis, and other three-dimensional effects are also needed to cooperate with multiangle and multilevel collection of impact information [ 12 ]. In addition, the price of clinical MRI diagnosis is higher compared with the routinely used X-ray and CT, and it is also difficult for comprehensive popularization [ 21 ].…”

“…In-depth MR safety knowledge is important, and by improving knowledge about the influence of a number of scanning parameters, RF-related burns as well as implant malfunctions could perhaps be avoided. There are international organisations that provide various opportunities for education, including workshops and eLearning [ 13 , 14 ], but those organisations were not mentioned in the interviews. Education in Swedish was asked for, but at present, there is no Swedish national body, or organisation, that can provide localised courses that would be as widely available as is requested.…”

“…‘Complexity of MR examinations’ was assessed by how many different types of examinations were performed in the unit, with scores ranging from 1 to 8. ‘Level of MR knowledge’ was judged by requesting the responsible radiographer on the site to report the fraction of staff who would be able to adjust five relevant safety parameters at the MR scanner console [ 7 , 14 ]; the numbers were then reduced to the mean of the five parameters.…”

“…With its latest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) safety publication, the American College of Radiology (ACR) reaffirms and reinforces key points from its 2013 publication and introduces new details. The greatest strength of this update lies in the "Refinements to Previously Published ACR Guidance on MR Safe Practice."…”
