Action cameras and the Roter interaction analysis system to assess veterinarian‐producer interactions in a dairy setting

Abstract: Herd health and production management (HH&PM) are critical aspects of production animal veterinary practice; therefore, dairy veterinarians need to effectively deliver these services. However, limited research that can inform veterinary education has been conducted to characterise these farm visits. The aim of the present study was to assess the applicability of action cameras (eg, GoPro cameras) worn by veterinarians to provide on-farm recordings, and the suitability of these recordings for comprehensive comm… Show more

“…Therefore, 12 recordings from 3 veterinarians were not included in the study, although each had provided up to 2 suitable recordings. This criterion was applied to reduce the risk of obtaining nonrepresentative data (in previous analyses, veterinary communications were highly variable among HH&PM farm visits; Ritter et al, 2018b).…”

“…Other RIAS studies have also relied on comparable sample sizes [33][34][35]. Ritter [36] used RIAS to analyze videos of 21 interactions; half of these interactions lost some amount of data due to minor logistical issues at either the end or the start of the video. Boss [28] analyzed 19 family conferences between parents of patients in the neonatal intensive care unit and healthcare providers.…”

“…Studies that have used such cameras have tended to use them to record the perspective of one person at a time, as in the study of chemistry classrooms by Galloway and Bretz (2016), or only include others on a subsidiary basis, as in Clifton Evers' (2015) study of surfers and Timothy Baghurst's (2016) study of preservice teachers. Only rarely have these cameras been used to capture interactions (e.g., Ritter, Barkema, & Adams, 2017). In our research, we provided each member of the family with one of these cameras to record authentic at-home communicative practices as they deemed appropriate.…”
