Active earth pressure for soils with tension cracks under steady unsaturated flow conditions

Abstract: The calculation of active earth pressure has commonly been performed under dry or saturated conditions. However, in practice soils are usually unsaturated. With the aim of estimating active earth pressure under steady unsaturated flow conditions, this paper describes a new method within the framework of the kinematic approach of limit analysis. A closed-form formula is adopted to estimate the suction stress of unsaturated soils subjected to vertical steady flow. A rotational failure mechanism composed of a log… Show more

“…Based on this equation, Srivastava and Jim 36 proposed the closed-form for the one-dimensional form to obtain the matric suction at different depths. Subsequently, Li and Yang 2 , 4 used it to solve the matric suction for backfill soil of retaining walls, and carried out an in-depth analysis of the influence parameters. In this study, this idea is referred to obtain matric suction of retaining walls considering transpiration.…”

“…Based on unsaturated shear strength theory, traditional methods for calculating earth pressure have been extended [16][17][18][19][20] . Meanwhile, the conditions, i.e., rainfall [20][21][22] , groundwater 5,23 , and evaporation 4,5 , that can change the unsaturated state of the soil are often considered in these theories, and the results show that the unsaturated state has a significant effect on the earth pressure of retaining wall. However, the influence of plant growing behind the retaining wall (Fig. 1) on earth pressure is ignored in the existing theoretical methods [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] .…”

“…Furthermore, the soil is often in an unsaturated state due to the influence of matric suction. The strength properties in unsaturated soils differ significantly from those in saturated soils [4][5][6]. Hence, a series of innovative works have been introduced within the academic community to tackle the characteristics of unsaturated soils [7].…”

“…The limit analysis method, relying on its rigorous and systematic theorem, has gradually been accepted by scholars and engineers in recent decades [14][15][16][17][18]. The difficulty of the lower-bound analysis exists in the establishment of the statically permissible stress field; for this reason, the construction of the appropriate stress field is generally performed with the help of finite element software.…”
