“…The Array data, as well as immunolocalization, showed that activin A is significantly up-regulated by IL-1 plus OSM in chondrocytes. Previous studies have shown that activin A is expressed in RA synovial tissue and can induce the proliferation of fibroblast-like synoviocytes in culture (41). In osteoarthritic cartilage, activin A exhibits anabolic properties, inducing expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 and increasing expression of type II collagen and proteoglycan synthesis in chondrocytes (42,43).…”

“…There is evidence that activin can both have an inhibitory or proliferative effect on cell proliferation; dependent on the cell type (41)(42)(43)(44)(45)(46)(47). In vivo studies have shown that FST knockout mice died soon after birth due to a variety of skeletal and cutaneous defects amongst other defects seen in the activin-deficient mice (48).…”

“…Activin A was shown to downregulate several IL-6-mediated functions, including B-cell proliferation, fibrinogen production and phagocytic activity of monocytes. 90 However, activin A has also been found to promote cell proliferation of synovial fibroblasts, 91 indicating that more studies are still necessary to establish the pathophysiological role of activin A in rheumatoid arthritis.…”
