Activity Modeling for Integrating Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Consideration as a New Element in Industrial Chemical Process Design

Abstract: In this paper, we present activity models of chemical process design integrating environmental, health and safety (EHS) evaluation as a new element with conventional economic and technical considerations on the basis of the design framework, which defines different stages of early process design with appropriate indicators for multiobjective evaluation. The type-zero method of Integrated DEFinition language or IDEF0 is selected as an activity modeling method for the hierarchical and transparent description of … Show more

“…Kikuchi et al (2012) used IDEF-0 to illustrate a systematic assessment process for environmental, health and safety aspects in the process development phase. Sugiyama et al (2008) used IDEF-0 as a modelling tool to support the integration of LCA in process design -the method helped them to highlight information requirements for the newly required activities.…”

“…The last step, Interpretation, is a systematic procedure to draw conclusions from all of the foregoing results of the study. Table 1 shows a schematization of the main stages involved in the design of a chemical plant, starting from the selection of the chemical route up to the operation of the actual plant [31,32]. It can be seen that the level of detail by which data on input and output flows can be estimated changes considerably with the considered design stage.…”

“…In this model, the whole design procedure is described hierarchically with focus on LCA related activities, and the economic evaluation is defined as an activity concurrent to LCA, enabling multi-objective evaluation and optimization of the process. Business process models of chemical process design integrating environmental, health and safety (EHS) evaluation have been developed as a new element with conventional economic and technical considerations Sugiyama et al, 2008). Integrated DEfinition for Functional model standard, Typezero (IDEF0) models of the design framework have been created, and herein EHS-related activities, tools and information are systematically defined as a part of the whole design activity.…”
