We present the complexities in terms of designing automotive exterior seating materials (seat coverings and interior linings) at Sage Automotive Interiors (UK), which is a division of a global international automotive textile supplier with headquarters in the US. Sustainability and innovation are emphasized in documents communicating the company's vision. Using a case study approach, we consider the current design, development and manufacture process and examine it for the potential for feedback loops, identify potential leverage points to effect change and how the process could divert wastes from disposal. We will highlight where sustainable decisions can be incorporated and the difficulties in achieving true sustainability. We argue that a systems approach is needed from conception to final product to ensure economic recycling of textiles and fibres used in automotive seating. Without which, the reality is at best incineration for energy and/or landfill, thus losing important, finite resources forever from a diminishing resource pool of raw materials.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a powerful tool to identify direct and indirect environmental burdens associated with products, processes and services. A critical phase of the LCA methodology is the collection of representative inventory data for the energy and material streams related to the production process. In the evaluation of new and emerging chemical processes, measured data are known only at laboratory scale and may have limited connection to the environmental footprint of the same process implemented at industrial scale. On the other hand, in the evaluation of processes already established at commercial scale, the availability of process data might be hampered by industrial confidentiality. In both cases, the integration of simple process design techniques in the LCA can contribute to overcome the lack of primary data, allowing a more correct quantification of the life cycle inventory. The present paper shows, through the review of case study examples, how simplified process design, modeling and simulation can support the LCA framework to provide a preliminary estimate of energy and material consumption data suitable for environmental assessment purposes. The discussed case studies illustrate the implementation of process design considerations to tackle availability issues of inventory data in different contexts. By evidencing the case-specific nature of the problem of preliminary conceptual process design, the study calls for a closer collaboration of process design experts and life cycle analysts in the green development of new products and processes.

There has been a recent surge in the number of disasters and incidents occurring in the process industry (e.g., the petrochemical, chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries). The reasons thereof include defects in process safety management (PSM); inadequate safety management systems in companies; inadequate knowledge among managers and insu cient information about the tasks undertaken and resultant erroneous operation and/or misjudgment; no standardization for the PSM activity; and other engineering factors. The purpose of PSM is to prevent industrial accidents by the establishment of the PSM system at the company level as well as an improvement in safety engineering techniques. Safety of chemical process plants can be achieved throughout the plant-lifecycle engineering (Plant-LCE), which is performed from research and development until to plant safety design, construction, and manufacturing (production and maintenance) stages. For systematic PSM, a model-based engineering framework is needed so that information can be used to inform all stages of the plant-lifecycle. Constantly updated and revised data and information must be shared at each engineering stage in a transparent way in order to examine the impacts of the safety decisions in all activities of the chemical process plant. The present paper reviews the existing studies on business process models, which have been developed for the process industrial activities, and introduces an integrated PSM framework which makes it possible to realize a consistent and collaborative PSM.
