Acute appendicitis after colorectal endoscopic mucosal resection: a case report

Abstract: Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) was originally described in 1973 and is currently a popular practice used in treating polyps, small adenomas, and early cancers. Although the safety of EMR has been proven in numerous studies, complications occur occasionally. We report a case in which the patient complained of severe upper abdominal pain and who was diagnosed with acute appendicitis after colorectal EMR. The patient recovered well after surgery. Cautious observation is necessary when resuming oral intake in … Show more

“…3,4 However, appendicitis after a colonoscopy or EMR-based diagnosis remains a subject of research and discussion, either as an incidental finding or an actual complication of this procedure. 4,5 It is important to emphasize here that in cases where a polyp is detected near the orifice of the appendix, the optimal option is EMR to avoid malignant transformation of the polyp. Before an endoscopic polypectomy procedure, the patient should be counseled that the appendix may need to be removed by laparoscopic surgery later if there are signs of appendicitis.…”

“…Postoperative complications, such as bleeding, perforation, infection, and recurrence, adversely impact the overall therapeutic effectiveness of the procedure. [9][10][11][12] The APC is a non-contact electrocoagulation technique utilized in medical procedures. It involves ionizing the inert gas argon into conductive argon plasma through the application of high-frequency electricity.…”
