Acute, Exercise Dose-Dependent Impairment in Atrial Performance During an Endurance Race

Abstract: During a trail-running race, an acute exercise-dose dependent impairment in atrial function was observed, mostly in the RA, which was related to RV systolic dysfunction. The impact on atrial function of long-term endurance training might lead to atrial remodeling, favoring arrhythmia development.

“…Assessment of RA with 2D speckle tracking echocardiography can provide more information on RA physio‐mechanics without the need of interventional methods. Most of the studies evaluating the RA by 2D speckle tracking echocardiography were only performed in healthy populations; however, the assessment of pathological conditions is needed . Depending on the methods used by the researchers, it is necessary to carefully examine the data they describe.…”

“…They should provide information on how they obtained their strain measurements. The proper definition of end‐diastole on the electrocardiogram and the proper identification of LS of RA phases should be clearly described to have consistency in the literature . Thus, new technological improvements can be used for physio‐mechanic assessment of the RV and RA in a standardized manner.…”

“…New echocardiographic parameters such as strain and the strain rate (SR) are closely related to the functional state of the LA and more sensitive in the early detection of its subtle changes . Strain and the SR represent the magnitude and rate of myocardial deformation .…”
