Acute Myeloid Leukemia Accompanied by Multiple Thrombophlebitis.

Abstract: A 66-year-old womansuffering from fever and thrombophlebitis was referred to our hospital. A peripheral blood examination revealed hyperleukocytosis with 96 % blast cells and thrombocytopenia. The patient was diagnosed as having acute myeloid leukemia (AML) accompanied by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). A marked decrease in protein C (PC) antigen and activity were observed. In this case, PC levels were lower than those observed in AMLwith DIC. Induction therapy for leukemia and treatment of DIC w… Show more

“…In patients presenting with thrombosis in the absence of DIC, deficiency of prothrombotic factors was investigated. Tsumita et al reported a case of AML with multiple thrombophlebitis due to hereditary protein C deficiency [4]. Another report of AML associated with DVT as a result of antithrombin III deficiency has also been reported [5].…”

“…Protein S is a glycoprotein cofactor for protein C and circulates in both an active (free) form and in an inactive complex with C4b binding protein [3]. Very few studies have measured the levels of proteins C and S in leukemia patients, their contributions to risk of thrombosis, and whether the levels are altered when the patients develop DIC [4][5][6][7][8]. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of the above-mentioned proteins in leukemia patients at presentation.…”

“…Patients with hematological malignancies have the highest risk of venous thrombosis, adjusted for age and sex (adjusted OR 28.0; 95% CI 4.0-199.7) [3]. Venous thrombosis is often accompanied with DIC [4][5][6][7].…”

“…Parmi les étiologies rapportées à la thrombose chez les patients atteints de LA, on peut citer le déficit constitutionnel en PC comme dans notre observation : le déficit héréditaire en PC avec une histoire familiale de tendance thrombotique au cours d'une LAM avec thrombophlébite multiple décrit par Tsumita et al [8] ; le déficit héréditaire en PC avec ischémie de l'artère iliaque externe droite dans une LAM5 par Kafetzakis et al [5].…”
