Nitrogen fertilization in pastures is considered one of the primary limiting factors that significantly enhance forage biomass production. Traditional chemical fertilizers used in crop cultivation are derived from petrochemical and mining industries. These production chains have undergone continuous and consistent structural changes year after year, affecting the prices of these inputs for farmers, consequently escalating production costs and even rendering investment in livestock farming unfeasible. For this reason, research becomes crucial to evaluate alternative techniques that can complement or fulfill the nitrogen demand in forage crops. The bacterium Azospirillum brasilense has emerged as a viable alternative to reduce costs in pasture establishment and maintenance, serving as a nitrogen source when compared to traditional sources. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of Azospirillum brasilense inoculation on the growth and production of Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça. The experimental design employed was a randomized complete block design with four treatments and four replications. Each plot consisted of three plants, resulting in a total of 48 experimental units. The treatments comprised: T1 - natural soil (NS), T2 - Azospirillum brasilense (BAC.), T3 - nitrogen topdressing (N), T4 - Azospirillum brasilense and nitrogen topdressing (BAC+N). Evaluations were conducted at 60 and 90 days after sowing (DAS), assessing the following variables: plant height (PH), number of leaves (NL), number of tillers (NT), aboveground green biomass (AGGB), aboveground dry biomass (ADBB), root fresh biomass (RFB), and root dry biomass (RDB). Significant effects (P<0.05) were observed for inoculation and nitrogen topdressing on the assessed traits: plant height, number of leaves, number of tillers, aboveground green biomass, aboveground dry biomass, root fresh biomass, and root dry biomass. Notably, nitrogen topdressing either solely or in combination with seed inoculation of the forage yielded positive outcomes for all studied variables at both 60 and 90 DAS. A favorable impact on the development of Mombaça grass was evident across all parameters studied in samples receiving nitrogen topdressing and Azospirillum spp. inoculation.

The relative contribution of young, mature and old tillers in the canopy influences the production and structure of the pasture. The objective with this work was to evaluate the balance between tiller appearance and tiller death (BAL) during spring and early summer, the morphology and percentages of young, mature and old tillers in Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu (marandu palisadegrass) with three conditions in late winter: short (24.1 cm), tall (49.0 cm) and tall (50.0 cm)/mown (8 cm). Tall and tall/mown pastures presented higher BAL in September and October, respectively. In January, BAL was higher in short and tall/mown pastures than in tall pasture. The tiller number was higher in short pasture, intermediate in tall/mown pasture and lower in tall pasture. The percentage of old tillers was higher in short and tall pastures compared to tall/mown pasture. The percentage of live leaf lamina reduced, while the percentage of dead leaf lamina increased with tiller age. Mowing of the tall marandu palisadegrass pasture in late winter increases the renewal of tillers in the spring and decreases the percentage of old tillers in the summer. The old tillers present worse morphology than young tillers.

O estado do Tocantins está localizado na nova fronteira agrícola do Brasil, região que compreende o Matopiba (região compreendida pelos estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia). O estado é caracterizado pela atividade pecuária, ocupando 6,2 milhões de hectares de pastagens plantadas e com um rebanho bovino efetivo de 10 milhões de cabeças. As pastagens ocupam lugar de destaque na cadeia produtiva de carne bovina. Em 2021, foram produzidas 79 milhões de toneladas de carne e derivados. O estado vem buscando se adequar aos modelos de produção sustentável, visando a intensificação dessas pastagens, ao mesmo tempo em que a agricultura vem se expandindo. Está ocorrendo um processo de alteração no uso e ocupação dessas áreas. Assim, este trabalho objetivou descrever o cenário das pastagens no estado do Tocantins, para caracterizar as principais mudanças e avanços na região e as perspectivas econômicas e desafios futuros. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida no formato de revisão bibliográfica, e foi pautada em selecionar fontes bibliográficas por meio da coleta de dados, leitura exploratória e seletiva, realização de análise e interpretação dos resultados encontrados. Para o presente estudo, foi utilizado o método dialético, pautado em argumentar e contra-argumentar com as ideias de diferentes autores, integrando suas ideias com as ideias do pesquisador. A escolha deste método, e por se tratar de um estudo bibliográfico, foi feita por meio da abordagem qualitativa de caráter exploratório, no momento da interpretação. Neste trabalho, foi adotada como estratégia metodológica o estudo exploratório, por meio de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, desenvolvida a partir de material já elaborado, constituído de livros e artigos científicos. Conclui-se que as áreas de pastagens apresentam estabilidade no estado do Tocantins. Há um processo dinâmico no uso dessas áreas para agricultura e outros fins, com incremento de produtividade nos últimos anos, mas ainda enfrenta desafios quanto à adoção de práticas de manejo.
