Adaptive Bandwidth Reservation and Scheduling for Efficient Wireless Telemedicine Traffic Transmission

Abstract: Abstract-Telemedicine traffic carries critical information with regard to a patients' condition; hence, it requires the highest transmission priority compared with all other types of traffic in the cellular network. The need for expedited errorless transmission of multimedia telemedicine traffic calls for a guaranteed bandwidth to telemedicine users. This condition, however, creates a tradeoff between the satisfaction of the very strict quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of telemedicine traffic and the loss… Show more

“…In [13], [14], and [15] for instance, the authors study bandwidth adaptation techniques for adaptive transmission of medical videos over the bandwidth-limited mobile networks, some targeting 4G and beyond small cells. Also, the authors in [16] target lower network layers in mobile tele-medicine, and propose a TDMA-based MAC layer scheme for bandwidth reservation among cells for tele-medicine traffic handoff.…”

“…To ensure safety and effectiveness of emergency care during such ambulance patient transfer, reliable and real-time communication is essential. However, the wireless networks along the roads in rural areas range from 4G to 2G to low speed satellite links, which can result in periods of arXiv:1707.04918v1 [cs.NI] 16 Jul 2017 low fidelity communication bandwidth. Figure 1 illustrates a real-world example.…”

“…In the context of telemedicine, very little work has been done on topics of packet scheduling for medical images and videos. For instance, in [19], an adaptive bandwidth reservation scheme and fair scheduling scheme for telemedicine transmission is presented. The proposed scheduling approach gives importance 125 to the packets based on the type of traffic they are transmitting, i.e.…”
