Adaptive Cylindrical Wireless Metasurfaces in Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract: B fields in the ROI. c) Variation of the mean signal with FAs and fitting results of λ r and λ t . A spoiled gradient echo sequence (SPGR) was used in the MRI experiment. d) λ t and λ r mappings. λ t is the enhancement ratio of the ACWM on the real FA or transmitting field, and λ r is the enhancement ratio corresponding to the signal intensity. Scale bar: 100 mm.

“…The increased intensity of magnetic field will allow the acquisition of anatomical and functional information at high resolution. Among the various practical designs of RF coils used for NMR imaging and EUHF MRI, birdcage RF coils are widely used, with applications ranging from low-field MRI systems to ultra-high-end MRI systems [76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90]. Recently, BC RF coils have been actively used in clinical applications [8,83,84] and pre-clinical animal experimental studies [85,86].…”

In particular, it is widely used in multinuclear MRI requiring high SNR and uniformity [77,[87][88][89][90].…”

“…While SNR penalty is a concern in double‐tuned coil design, particularly for clinical translation considering the acceptable acquisition time in clinical scenarios, this could be relieved by using separate and decoupled physical coils for different resonances within the same coil set 133 . The recent advances in metamaterials for proton coils in clinical setups 134 could also be considered in future X‐nuclei or dual‐tuned coil designs.…”

“…In early investigations, metasurfaces were designed to be planar, which only enhanced the MRI signal in shallow penetration 4,5 . Our recent work demonstrated a cylindrical and compact metasurface device that provides homogeneous SNR enhancement when wrapped around human wrists 6 . The metasurface device, with the body coil as receiving coil, can significantly amplify the RF receiving field and achieve two to three folds SNR enhancement compared to a four‐channel flexible coil, thus can be used as an alternative surface coil in clinical wrist MRI.…”
