The wide-spread Internet of Things (IoT) utilization in almost every scope of our life made it possible to automate daily life tasks with no human intervention. This promising technology has immense potential for making life much easier and open new opportunities for newly developed applications to emerge. However, meeting the diverse Quality of Service (QoS) demands of different applications remains a formidable topic due to diverse traffic patterns, unpredictable network traffic, and resource-limited nature of IoT devices. In this context, application-tailored QoS provisioning mechanisms have been the primary focus of academic research. This paper presents a literature review on QoS techniques developed in academia for IoT applications and investigates current research trends. Background knowledge on IoT, QoS metrics, and critical enabling technologies will be given beforehand, delving into the literature review. According to the comparison presented in this work, the commonly considered QoS metrics are Latency, Reliability, Throughput, and Network Usage. The reviewed studies considered the metrics that fit their provisioning solutions.

In the current technology driven era, the use of devices that connect to the internet has increased significantly. Consequently, there has been a significant increase in internet traffic. Some of the challenges that arise from the increased traffic include, but are not limited to, multiple clients on a single server (which can result in denial of service (DoS)), difficulty in network scalability, and poor service availability. One of the solutions proposed in literature, to mitigate these, is the use of multiple servers with a load balancer. Despite their common use, load balancers, have shown to have some disadvantages, like being vendor specific and non-programmable. To address these disadvantages and improve internet traffic, there has been a paradigm shift which resulted in the introduction of software defined networking (SDN). SDN allows for load balancers that are programmable and provides the flexibility for one to design and implement own load balancing strategies. In this survey, we highlight the key elements of SDN and OpenFlow technology and their effect on load balancing. We provide an overview of the various load balancing schemes in SDN. The overview is based on research challenges, existing solutions, and we give possible future research directions. A summary of emulators/mathematical tools commonly used in the design of intelligent load balancing SDN algorithms is provided. Finally, we outline the performance metrics used to evaluate the algorithms.

The growth of the networks has difficult network management. Recently, a concept called software-defined network (SDN) has been proposed to address this issue, which makes network management more adaptable. Control and forwarding planes are separated in SDN. The control plane is a centralized logical controller that controls the network. The forwarding plane that consists of transfer devices is responsible for transmitting packets. Because the network resources are limited, optimizing the use of resources in the networks is an important issue. Load balancing improves the balanced distribution of loads across multiple resources in order to maximize the reliability and network resources efficiency. SDN controllers can create an optimal load balancing compared to traditional networks because they have a network global view. The load-balancing problem can be solved using many different natureinspired meta-heuristic techniques because it has the NP-complete nature.Hence, for solving load balancing problem in SDN, nature-inspired metaheuristic techniques are important methods. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is not a survey or systematic review on studying these matters. Accordingly, in the area of the load balancing in the SDN, this paper reviews systematically the nature-inspired meta-heuristic techniques. Also, this study demonstrates advantages and disadvantages regarded of the chosen nature-inspired meta-heuristic techniques and considers their algorithms metrics. Moreover, to apply better load balancing techniques in the future, the important challenges of these techniques have been investigated.
