Additive Biomanufacturing with Collagen Inks

Abstract: Collagen is a natural polymer found abundantly in the extracellular matrix (ECM). It is easily extracted from a variety of sources and exhibits excellent biological properties such as biocompatibility and weak antigenicity. Additionally, different processes allow control of physical and chemical properties such as mechanical stiffness, viscosity and biodegradability. Moreover, various additive biomanufacturing technology has enabled layer-by-layer construction of complex structures to support biologica… Show more

“…Materials used for 3D bioprinting must support cell viability and proper functioning, by providing structural and mechanical support for the model, biocompatibility, and easy manipulation of the bioprinter for acquisition of a 3D structure. 17,18 As such, this biomaterial meets the major requirements for potential use with 3D printing. The effective solution for any existing problems, linked to technical and cellular aspects of this procedure, will make it possible to obtain samples of various tissues that can in turn be used in regenerative medicine.…”

“…The results were in accordance with the previous report (Vakili Zahir et al, 2018). Blank NPs were observed to be least cytotoxic even at the highest concentrations tested, which can be attributed to the biocompatible and biodegradable nature of the excipients used in the formulation development (Chan et al, 2020). Silymarin-loaded NPs showed less cytotoxicity in comparison to free silymarin, as the drug has been efficiently entrapped inside the collagen nanoparticle and is slowly released from the nanoparticle resulting in less drug exposure to cells under similar conditions.…”

“…In the current study, silymarin-encapsulated collagen nanoparticles have been prepared by using a simple but efficient method for brain-targeted drug delivery. Biopolymer collagen was strategically chosen, as it is biocompatible, biodegradable, and weakly antigenic (Chan et al, 2020), and Tween © 80 aids in drug transport across the BBB by imitating through lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) receptors present on the brain surface (Sun et al, 2004;Aboutaleb et al, 2014). The micellar structure was formed by Tween © 80, a polyethylene sorbitol ester, which is a non-ionic surfactant.…”

“…Furthermore, bioprinting, as a type of additive manufacturing, is amenable to scaled up tissue fabrication and manufacturing, an important consideration as clinical use of fabricated tissues increases (Wu et al, 2017;Skylar-Scott et al, 2019;Castilho et al, 2020). The development of materials compatible with cells and other biologics, so called "bioinks" has also exploded involving a variety of artificial and native material types (Chimene et al, 2016;Chan et al, 2020;Cui et al, 2020), material sourcing (Abaci and Guvendiren, 2020), curing features (GhavamiNejad et al, 2020), and utilities (Whitford and Hoying, 2016;Unagolla and Jayasuriya, 2020). While the practical aspects and applications involving bioprinting are actively explored (as indicated by the recent burst of informative reviews on bioprinting and bioinks), the integration of biological responses and dynamics in bioprinted systems are less addressed.…”
