Adenocarcinoid of the Appendix Presenting as a Disseminated Ovarian Carcinoma: Report of a Case

Abstract: The occurrence of disseminated tumors of the appendix is a rare event. Usually appendix tumors are very small, located on the inside of the appendix, and can be pathologically diagnosed. Adenocarcinoid is an uncommon variant of carcinoid tumors that usually arises in the appendix. This report describes a case of a primary adenocarcinoid of the appendix in a patient who was preoperatively diagnosed to have uterus myomatosus but was intraoperatively found to instead have disseminated ovarian carcinoma. This case… Show more

“…Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix is an uncommon neoplasm that can be found as an incidental finding in asymptomatic patients, cause acute appendicitis (the most common presentation), or lead to fatal widespread metastatic disease [22]. The histogenesis of GCC is still controversial, and whether GCC is a variant of the classical carcinoid tumor or a low-grade appendiceal adenocarcinoma is the subject of debate with proponents of both arguments.…”

“…There are three types of malignant tumors of the appendix: carcinoid tumors, adenocarcinomas, and a very small group of nonepithelial tumors. 3 Primary appendiceal cancer is diagnosed in only 0.9%-1.4% of appendectomy specimens. 4 Moreover, signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix is extremely uncommon, accounting for just 0.43% of appendiceal malignancies.…”
