Adhesion, proliferation, and apoptosis in different molecular portraits of breast cancer treated with silver nanoparticles and its pathway-network analysis

Abstract: BackgroundSilver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted considerable attention due to the variety of their applications in medicine and other sciences. AgNPs have been used in vitro for treatment of various diseases, such as hepatitis B and herpes simplex infections as well as colon, cervical, and lung cancers. In this study, we assessed the effect on proliferation, adhesion, and apoptosis in breast cancer cell lines of different molecular profiles (MCF7, HCC1954, and HCC70) exposed to AgNPs (2–9 nm).MethodsBrea… Show more

“…However, increasing evidence revealed that chemotherapeutic agents induced limited anticancer effects along with serve side effects. 19 Thus, innovative chemosensitizers to elevate the cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutic agents to tumor cells are urgently needed. Several reports have demonstrated that some chemosensitizers, such as verapamil, 20 could efficiently enhance the cytotoxicity of chemotherapy, resulting in prolonged survival time in mice mouse models.…”

“…In general, non-tumor cells are more resistant to the cytotoxic effect of silver. It is likely that tumor cell lines are more susceptible due to the increased cell replication rate [ 34 , 35 , 36 ]. Unlike ionic silver, nanoparticles could induce cell death primarily through mechanical impact and catalytic action enhancing lipid peroxidation, leading to proteotoxicity and necrotic cell death [ 35 ].…”

“…The initial symptom of EMT that can be observed (using a microscope) is the migration capacity of cells, which is manifested, inter alia, in the popular and widely used scratch overgrowth test. Rodríguez-Razón et al [25] studied the migration ability of breast cancer cell lines and compared the effect of AgNPs (of 2-9 nm nominal diameter) on three breast cancer cell lines: MCF-7, HCC70, and HCC1954. The AgNPs significantly reduced the adhesion of MCF-7 cells and decreased the viability of the cells by approximately 45%.…”
