Adhesive Capsulitis: Demographics and Predictive Factors for Success Following Steroid Injections and Surgical Intervention

Abstract: Purpose: Examine demographic factors of all patients treated for adhesive capsulitis by a single surgeon, report the treatments and outcomes of these patients, and determine the effectiveness of various treatments, including corticosteroid injections and operative intervention in relation to risk factors for adhesive capsulitis. Methods: All patients treated for adhesive capsulitis by a single surgeon between 2008 to 2014 with minimum 2 years' follow-up were identified via charts and operative reports and were… Show more

“…[ 29 ] Diabetes is identified as a precipitating factor for resistance to conservative treatments or MUA and the need to multiple surgical interventions. [ 31 33 ] In our opinion, diabetes may be a risk factor for the need to other treatments due to poor outcome following MUA. However, its association with the need to other treatments during follow-up was not demonstrated on our logistic regression analysis.…”

“…In fact, these validations are both of their specific and general scales. However, it is noteworthy that another frequent dysfunction, adhesive capsulitis [ 277 ], does not have a specific validated tool, and only a general scale has been validated for this dysfunction (i.e., the SPADI) [ 167 ].…”

“…Further, the patients with FS should also be treated for underlying medical disorder (DM and thyroid dysfunction) as poor control of these disorders may result in prolonged severity of disease. Although diabetics often tend to have severe disease and require prolonged conservative treatment and require surgical treatment more often than non-diabetics [42][43][44], one must not give up conservative treatment trial and expedite surgical treatment in diabetics.…”
