Adhesive Strips for the Closure of Surgical Incisional Sites

Abstract: The findings suggest that adhesive strips may be an efficient closure material for certain small-length incisions. Further research is warranted on outcomes such as dehiscence and the need for resuturing.

“…In a systematic review and meta‐analysis of adhesive strips for surgical site incisional sites, Gkegkes and colleagues found three studies that found no significant difference in WD risk between adhesive strips and suturing, stapling, and tissue glue, although one study found the need for resuturing to be significantly higher for wounds closed using strips. They speculated that this may be because accurate skin edge apposition is not always possible as the wound edges may evert as postoperative swelling decreases . We agree and feel that tissue adhesive provides better security and approximation for the wound edges.…”

“…With regards to long‐term cosmesis, there were no studies with outcomes greater than 6 weeks. A systematic review and meta‐analysis of surgical incision closure have been published, demonstrating superior long‐term cosmesis with adhesive tape compared to sutures, although none of the incisions were performed on the neck . The meta‐analysis showed that closure with adhesive tape was also found to have better patient satisfaction at follow‐up and lower incidences of redness, potentially giving this method of closure an advantage compared to sutures.…”

“…17 Adhesive strips have been shown to have similar rates of infection, wound dehiscence, and cosmetic results as sutures, but have only been systematically compared in small surgical wounds. 18 It is the opinion of the first author that large or high-tension wounds with controlled hemostasis be managed with wet-to-dry dressings and delayed closure. Wounds that require intervention for hemostasis can be sutured, with the provider maintaining a low threshold for evacuation for definitive management.…”
