Adipogenesis: A Complex Interplay of Multiple Molecular Determinants and Pathways

Abstract: The formation of adipocytes during embryogenesis has been largely understudied. However, preadipocytes appear to originate from multipotent mesenchymal stromal/stem cells which migrate from the mesoderm to their anatomical localization. Most studies on adipocyte formation (adipogenesis) have used preadipocytes derived from adult stem/stromal cells. Adipogenesis consists of two phases, namely commitment and terminal differentiation. This review discusses the role of signalling pathways, epigenetic modifiers, an… Show more

“…At this moment, obesity is described as a heterogeneous syndrome (determined by the genetic and environmental factors' interaction) [8,[12][13][14]. Previous studies have pointed out the different obesity types [15]: "metabolically healthy obesity"-MHO (defined by obesity presence without metabolic disturbance or metabolic syndrome features [8,12,16] and "metabolically unhealthy obesity-MUO" [8,12,16].…”

“…Adipose tissue that differentiates from mesenchymal stem cells during the embryonic period is responsible for many functions, including energy storage, lipid metabolism, and hormone secretion (Ambele et al, 2020 ; Poklukar et al, 2020 ). Since the amount of adipose tissue in meat impacts the economic value of animals, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying adipose tissue generation in animals will ensure that production is maximized within an appropriate range.…”

“…According to the World Health Organization, 39% of adults are overweight, and 13% are obese globally. 1 Obesity has nearly tripled since 1975 and is predicted to triple by 2030. 2 Obesity poses a severe threat to overall human health due to its close association with a cluster of pathological entities globally designated as metabolic syndrome, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), dyslipidemia, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.…”
