“…Furthermore, we showed that adiponectin treatment (5 mg/mL) rapidly increased MAPK, ERK1/2, and p38 phosphorylation. The concentration of adiponectin tested in vitro was physiological, as in rats and humans the average plasma adiponectin levels range from 3-20 mg/mL (27,37,38). Curiously, we did not observe an effect of adiponectin on AMPK phosphorylation, whereas recombinant adiponectin is able to activate AMPK in rat, chicken, and porcine GCs (24,26,27).…”

“…In the studies evaluating the response of adiponectin to acute hyperglycemia during OGTT, adiponectin levels were not changed 2 h after glucose load in insulin-sensitive slim probands [31] , as well as in normal glucose-tolerant, impaired glucosetolerant, and type 2 diabetic probands [32] , whereas an increase in adiponectin levels was observed in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome [33] . In the present study we detected an increased adiponectin response to oral glucose at 2 h during OGTT which was not present in nonacne healthy controls and was diminished after isotretinoin therapy.…”

“…Although this topic has been investigated by many research groups, there is still no clear evidence of a direct relationship between hypoadiponectinemia and PCOS. A number of studies showed an independent decrease in adiponectin levels in PCOS patients [108,[112][113][114][115][116][117][118], but others failed to demonstrate a direct link between hypoadiponectinemia and PCOS [119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129]. Whether hypoadiponectinemia is or is not directly implicated in the development of PCOS, it surely participates in the insulin-resistant state observed in those patients, and there has been speculation that hypoadiponectinemia could be used to identify women with PCOS who are at higher risk for the future development of type 2 diabetes [130] and coronary artery diseases (CAD) [117].…”
