Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells reduce MMP-1 expression in UV-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts: therapeutic potential in skin wrinkling

Abstract: Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSCs) have been reported to have therapeutic benefit in skin. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of AdMSCs in UV-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) for therapeutic potential in skin wrinkling. UV irradiation, a model naturally mimic skin wrinkle formation, is known to increase matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), making MMP-1 a target for skin photoaging. Our findings identified that AdMSCs reduce MMP-1 level in UV-irradiated HDFs and increase type… Show more

“…After 4 weeks of application period, parameters related to skin aging, such as wrinkle and skin texture, were significantly improved. Several reports demonstrated anti-aging efficacies of stem cell conditioned media, mostly from stem cells which are not related to the skin, such as adipose-derived stem cells or placental cord blood stem cells [ 29 , 49 , 50 ]. This study is about the efficacy of conditioned media from stem cells with epidermal characteristics.…”

“…The primary function of MMP-3 is the activation of pro-MMPs such as collagenases, gelatinase B, and matrilysins during ECM turnover. In particular, the production of fully active MMP-1 MMP-3 is essential to partially activate pro-MMP-1 [ 9 , 25 , 26 ]. MMP-10, known as stromelysin-2, cleaves various ECM proteins and is involved in the activation of pro-MMPs.…”
