Adopting an Ecosystem Services-Based Approach for Flood Resilient Strategies: The Case of Rocinha Favela (Brazil)

Abstract: Rocinha (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is the largest favela in South America. It is located on a steep mountain slope in the Tijuca National Park with a population of over 160,000 living in poor environmental, health and hygiene conditions. The geomorphological and urban setting of Rocinha makes it vulnerable to natural hazards, with the greatest risk posed by flooding or landslides, compromising the precarious balance between ecosystem services (ES) provision and human well-being. The paper aims to assess and map … Show more

“…The yellow cluster reveals the research based on climate change and urban stormwater management in the urban floods field. On the one hand, with the change of global climate, cities' vulnerability and resilience are studied [122,123]; on the other hand, a portion of researchers, with thoughts of the system, focus on urban stormwater management around green infrastructure and put forward policy suggestions from the perspective of the government. Climate change and urbanization are generally regarded as the two main causes of urban floods [124][125][126].…”

“…However, a transition will provide future opportunities for income generation. Initiatives such as ecosystems services and nature-based solutions can provide a more just transition that has long-term benefits for infrastructure development and climate adaptation 176 . Public financing of green buildings for vulnerable population could reduce GHG emissions and attend to the housing needs of some 20 million people currently living under informal conditions.…”
