In the last few decades of industrialization, the concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere had increased rapidly. Different organizations have invested considerable funds in research activities worldwide for CO 2 capture and storage. To date, significant work has been done and various technologies have been proposed for CO 2 capture and storage. Both adsorption and absorption are promising techniques for CO 2 capture, but low-temperature adsorption processes using solid adsorbents are the prevailing technique nowadays. In this review paper, a variety of adsorbents such as carbonaceous materials, dry alkali metal-based sorbents, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and microporous organic polymers (MOPs) have been studied. Various methods of chemical or physical modification and the effects of supporting materials have been discussed to enhance CO 2 capture capacity of these adsorbents. Low-temperature (\100°C) adsorption processes for CO 2 capture are critically analyzed and concluded on the basis of information available so far in the literature. All the information in CO 2 adsorption using different routes has been discussed, summarized and thoroughly presented in this review article. The most important comparative study of relatively new material MOFs and MOPs is carried out between the groups and with other sorbent as well.

The adsorption equilibrium of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen (N 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), and hydrogen (H 2 ), was studied at 303 K, 323 K, and 343 K, and pressures up to 7 bar, in titanium based MOF granulates, amino-functionalized titanium terephthalate MIL-125(Ti)_NH 2 . The affinity of the different adsorbates towards the adsorbent presented the following order: CO 2 > CH 4 > CO > N 2 > H 2 from the most adsorbed to the less adsorbed component. Subsequently, adsorption kinetics and multicomponent adsorption equilibrium were studied by means of single, binary and ternary breakthrough curves at 323 K and 4.5 bar with different feed mixtures. Both studies are complementary, and aim the syngas purification for two different applications, hydrogen production and H 2 /CO composition adjustment to be used as feed in the Fisher-Tropsch processes. The isosteric heats were calculated from the adsorption equilibrium isotherms and are 21.9 kJ mol -1 for CO 2 , 14.6 kJ mol -1 for CH 4 , 13.4 kJ mol -1 for CO, and 11.7 kJ mol -1 for N 2 . In the overall pressure and temperature range the adsorption equilibrium isotherms were well regressed against the Langmuir model. The multicomponent breakthrough experimental results allowed validation of the adsorption equilibrium predicted by the multicomponent extension of the Langmuir isotherm, and validation of the fixed-bed mathematical model. To conclude, two pressure swing adsorption cycles were designed and performed experimentally, one for hydrogen purification from a 30%/70% CO 2 /H 2 mixture (hydrogen purity was 100 % with recovery of 23.5 %), and a second PSA cycle to obtain a light product with a H 2 /CO ratio between 2.2 and 2.4 to feed to a Fischer-Tropsch processes. The experimental cycle produced a light stream with a H 2 /CO ratio of 2.3, and a CO 2 enriched stream with 86.6 % purity as heavy product. The CO 2 recovery was 93.5 %

Methodologies for evaluation of metal–organic frameworks in separation applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer considerable potential for separating a wide variety of mixtures. For any given separation, there are several MOFs that could be employed. Therefore, there is a need for reliable procedures for screening and ranking MOFs with regard to their anticipated performance in fixed-bed adsorbers, commonly used in industry. Such fixed-bed adsorbers are invariably operated in a transient mode. The separation performance of fixed-bed adsorbers is governed by a number of factors that include adsorption selectivity, uptake capacity, and intra-crystalline diffusion limitations. We undertake a detailed analysis of the separations of several mixtures that include: C 2 H 2 /CO 2 , CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /CH 4 , H 2 S/ CO 2 /CH 4 , H 2 /CO 2 /CO/CH 4 /N 2 , Xe/Kr, C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 , C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 , O 2 /N 2 , N 2 /CH 4 , hexane isomers, xylene isomers, and styrene/ethylbenzene. For each separation, we compare the performance of a few carefully selected MOFs by using transient breakthrough simulations that are representative of practical operations. These case studies demonstrate that screening MOFs on the basis of adsorption selectivity alone, as is common practice, often leads to wrong conclusions as regards their separation capability in fixed-bed adsorbers. High uptake capacities often compensate for low selectivities.Conversely, low uptake capacities diminish the separation performance of MOFs with high selectivities.Intra-crystalline diffusion limitations lead to distended breakthroughs, and diminished productivities in a number of cases. We also highlight the possibility of harnessing intra-crystalline diffusion limitations to reverse the adsorption selectivity; this strategy is useful for selective capture of nitrogen from natural gas, and in air separations.
