Adsorption of gold from thiosulfate solutions with chemically modified activated carbon

Abstract: Adsorption of the gold-thiosulfate complex ion (AuðS 2 O 3 Þ 3À 2 ) on silver ferrocyanide (AgFC)-impregnated activated carbon in aqueous solution has been studied in order to find an effectual adsorbent for the thiosulfate extracting gold from ores. This study was performed using AgFCimpregnated activated carbon (AC-Ag-R-FC: AC: activated carbon, Ag: silver nitrate, R: heating, FC: potassium ferrocyanide) and an artificial aqueous solution of AuðS 2 O 3 Þ 3À 2 . Gold-thiosulfate complex adsorption kinetics an… Show more

“…On the other hand, when the thioglycolic acid is impregnated on the carbon surface, the gold thiosulfate complex must first reach the surface of the carbon before gold can transfer inside the porous carbon. Thus, a mass transfer resistance is added to the adsorption process [ 14 , 22 ]. The isotherms presented in Figure 2 b also evidence this behavior.…”

“…The adsorption solution was prepared according to the procedure reported by Yu et al [ 22 ]. To this end, 10 mL of a gold standard solution (1000 mg·L −1 ) were added drop-by-drop to 900 mL of a sodium thiosulfate solution (0.1 mol·L −1 ).…”

“…A standard gold solution (1000 mg/L) from Sigma-Aldrich, USA, with 99.999% purity was used to prepare a gold thiosulfate solution. First, the desired volume of standard gold solution was evaporated to dryness to remove the acid, and then 0.2 mol/L sodium thiosulfate solution (Unless mentioned otherwise) with pH = 9.1 was added to prepare the Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 3– solution with a final pH = 9.0 ± 0.1.…”

“…Adsorben yang paling populer namun konvensional adalah karbon aktif [8], sedangkan adsorben lain yang mulai banyak dikembangkan silika mesopori [9], oksida komposit [10], dan adsorben alami seperti alga [11] dan bakteri [12]. Namun, adsorben ini memiliki kelemahan yaitu masih menggunakan sentrifugasi konvensional atau metode filtrasi untuk pemisahan yang menimbulkan masalah operasional dan kepraktisan.…”
