Adsorption studies of phosphate ions on alginate-calcium carbonate composite beads

Abstract: Alginate-calcium carbonate composite beads was prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) instruments. Adsorption potential of phosphate ions have been studied on laboratory scale. The effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial analyte concentration, pH and agitation speed were optimized at 298.15 K (25°C) in a single ion system. The adsorption process was in accordance with Freundlich model and pseudo seco… Show more

“…It is very important to verify the carbonate content in sediments because carbonate can immobilize phosphorus. Carbonate solubility is mainly affected by the pressure, temperature and pH (Hauck et al 2012; Zaaboub et al 2014; Mahmood et al 2015). The bottom water salinity ranged from 0.03 to 13.48 at stations 1 and 15, respectively.…”

“…Zahid et al used calcium alginate beads doped with calcium carbonate for the removal of phosphate ions [ 33 ]. Han et al entrapped the hydroxides of Mg and Al in the beads of calcium alginate and studied the extraction of phosphate [ 34 ].…”

“…The sludge was encapsulated in calcium alginate beads using the ionic cross-linking technique previously reported by Mahmood et al (2015) with slight modification. Commercial grade sodium alginate [laboratory reagent (LR) grade, Breckland Scientific Supplies, UK] was first dissolved in double distilled water and stirred to obtain a gel-like consistency.…”
