Advanced Fiber Materials for Wearable Electronics

Abstract: Fiber materials are highly desirable for wearable electronics that are expected to be flexible and stretchable. Compared with rigid and planar electronic devices, fiber-based wearable electronics provide significant advantages in terms of flexibility, stretchability and breathability, and they are considered as the pioneers in the new generation of soft wearables. The convergence of textile science, electronic engineering and nanotechnology has made it feasible to build electronic functions on fibers and maint… Show more

“…[20,99,100] Carbon cloth, carbon fiber paper, nickel foam, and stainless-steel mesh are the commonly used substrates for the fabrication of self-supporting air cathodes, while graphene sheets, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are designed for free-standing air cathodes. [101][102][103] Through acid oxidation treatment and air calcination, Kordek et al [104] fabricated a nanoporous carbon cloth-based air cathode (CC-AC) decorated with plentiful oxygen-containing functional groups (Figure 9a). When directly used in wearable aqueous [94] Copyright 2019, Wiley-VCH.…”

“…Additionally, promoting self-powered electronics presents a potential solution for alleviating energy supply burdens and facilitating sustainable development pathways. The self-powering mechanisms commonly employed for wearable sensors by energy harvesting can be categorized as triboelectric, piezoelectric, thermoelectric and pyroelectric, where piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENG) haven shown great potential and ability to respond to tactile stimuli with high mechanical-to-electrical conversion efficiency as a result of their stable responsiveness [14][15][16].…”

“…Fiber-shaped sensors exhibit good flexibility and lightness, and they can also be woven into breathable fabrics, making them an ideal choice for wearable devices in the future. So far, the dual-mode fiber strain sensors based on photonic crystal have been reported by using hydrogels . Although hydrogels have advantages in biocompatibility, adhesiveness, aqueous environment, wet state, and softness in contact with soft tissues, their long-term use is limited due to low environmental stability caused by water evaporation. , For fiber-shaped wearable devices, having durable and stable optical/electrical properties is crucial for practical applications.…”
