Advanced interfaces for music enjoyment

Abstract: Music enjoyment in a digital format is more than listening to a binary file. An overall music description is made of many interdependent aspects, that should be taken into account in an integrated and synchronized way. In this article, a proposal for an advanced interface to enjoy music in all its aspects will be described. The encoding language that allows the design and implementation of such interface is the IEEE P1599 standard, an XML-based format known as MX.

“…The characteristics of the format suggest not only the implementation of a traditional viewer, but the design of a tool to deeply interact with music contents. The guidelines of such an application have been described in (Baratè and Ludovico, 2008). In our opinion, a format such as IEEE 1599 supports three models of music fruition.…”

“…This use case we has coupled the comprehensive description of music and music-related aspects offered by the IEEE 1599 format with an example of standard formalism to encode dance movements, namely Labanotation scores. Many aspects strictly connected to music representation, ranging from interfaces for an advanced enjoyment to educational frameworks, have been explored in other papers and scientific publications (for example, see [21] and [22] respectively).…”
