Advanced Materials Based on Nanosized Hydroxyapatite

Abstract: The development of new materials based on hydroxyapatite has undergone a great evolution in recent decades due to technological advances and development of computational techniques. The focus of this review is the various attempts to improve new hydroxyapatite-based materials. First, we comment on the most used processing routes, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. We will now focus on other routes, less common due to their specificity and/or recent development. We also include a block dedicated t… Show more

“…Since both TEMPO and hydroxyapatites can be used as catalysts, it is possible that the combined material will also have this application. Nitroxide radicals and compounds modified by them are mainly used in oxidation reactions [ 68 , 69 ], while hydroxyapatites can be employed in numerous processes, e.g., racemization, biogasoline synthesis and reactions requiring transition metal catalysts [ 70 ]. The issue of whether the HA/TEMPO composites will have additional benefits as catalysts requires further investigation.…”

“…Importantly, hydroxyapatite provides also a good osteointegration so it allows formation of the direct functional and structural connection between the tissue and the biomaterial modified with this inorganic compound [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Due to these features HAp is often used currently for preparation of various biomaterials [ 12 , 13 ]. For example, a growing interest is currently observed for application of hydroxyapatite in preparation of coatings for implants.…”

“…The proposed biomaterial must be able to interact with the surrounding tissue, and the patient’s immune response must be minimized. Furthermore, the scaffold should provide adequate mechanical strength to the bone defect site and efficiently encapsulate and control the release of drugs or proteins [ 9 , 10 ].…”
