Advanced Neuroimaging With Photon-Counting Detector CT

Abstract: Photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) is an emerging technology and promises the next step in CT evolution. Photon-counting detectors count the number of individual incoming photons and assess the energy level of each of them. These mechanisms differ substantially from conventional energy-integrating detectors. The new technique has several advantages, including lower radiation exposure, higher spatial resolution, reconstruction of images with less beam-hardening artifacts, and advanced opportu… Show more

“…The PC CT overcomes the limitations of CT technology reported during the last decades and allows us to depict even the smallest structures of the middle ear as well as better recognize several materials to create higher-contrast images [ 8 ]. This novel approach provides improved image quality and results in clearer images with enhanced tissue differentiation and reduced artifacts [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. The cutting-edge technique of photon counting technology, alongside an evolved detector design, addresses the long-standing problems of earlier systems.…”

“…In recent years, the field of medical imaging has witnessed a transformative breakthrough in the form of photon-counting computed tomography (PC CT), which has the potential to address the challenging imaging of small anatomical structures [ 6 , 7 , 8 ]. The distinctions of this technology lie in the signal processing and offer several advantages in imaging, including higher spatial resolution at the level of 0.2 mm.…”
