Advances in endoscopic imaging: Advantages and limitations

Abstract: Endoscopic imaging is emerging beyond the confines of traditional white light endoscopy. There is a plethora of advanced imaging technologies which aim to improve visualization of the vascular network and surface texture of the mucosa and thereby improve tissue characterization, differentiation, and diagnosis. These include the wide field technologies like chromoendoscopy, narrow band imaging and autofluorescence endoscopy and point enhancement or virtual histology technologies like endocytoscopy and confocal … Show more

“…Ultrasonography method can be used to diagnose stomach tumor, intestinal tumor, liver disease, kidney disease, cholestasis, IBD, and hypertrophic gastropathy (Penninck and d'Anjou, 2008). Endoscopy method can be used to diagnose cases such as esophaginitis, stomach ulcer, and achronic gastritis (Banerjee and Reddy, 2012).…”

“…Flexible endoscopy has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of many gastrointestinal diseases. 1 Newly developed endoscopic approaches are applied to domains like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), morbid obesity, pancreatic necrosis, and cholecystitis, which were once possible only through surgery. 2 However, despite numerous advances in endoscopic surgery, some gastroesophageal pathologies remain too difficult or dangerous for the endoluminal approach alone.…”
