Advances in Inhibitive Water-Based Drilling Fluids–Can they Replace Oil-Based Muds?

Abstract: This paper discusses the systematic design and development of high performance water-based muds and provides insight into the unique chemistry and inhibition characteristics of various amine inhibitors. Equally important, performance correlations of inhibitive systems in laboratory testing as compared to state-of-the-art inhibitive systems are included. Invert emulsion drilling fluids have long been effective in drilling reactive shale. Developing high performance (highly inhibitive) water-ba… Show more

“…Polymer-based drilling fluids are used to drill pay zones, horizontal and multilateral wells due to the clean and minimum formation damage property. Polymer mud formulated with KCl, xanthan gum, starch and PAC-LV shows an improved hole cleaning and hole stability property (Simonides et al 2002;Kjosnes et al 2003;Patel et al 2007). Xanthan gum has got unique rheological properties, such as high lowshear viscosity and strong shear thinning character in the solution.…”

“…The inhibition mechanism of organic amine inhibitor is different from traditional inhibitory drilling fluid and by aid of unique molecular structure of organic amine, this inhibitor can well inlay between clay formations and connect the clay formations tightly [9][10][11]. Thus, it can decrease the moisture absorption trend of clay and have a strong inhibitory effect on the hydration of shale.…”
