Advances in large scale applications of superconductors

Abstract: Most applications are still relying on LTS use as the magnet systems for large accelerators and for magnetic fusion devices. NMR spectrometers are approaching the 1000 MHz class (23.5 T in the magnet bore), a challenge to most advanced LTSs as well as to HTSs. In MRI trends for HTS use have successfully been demonstrated, as well as for cryogen-free magnets, SMES and magnetic separation. However economy will depend on HTS wire cost reductions. Already well in use are HTS current leads, contributing to advantag… Show more

“…Another well-investigated experimental T c trend is the slight increase of the optimized T c of the RE-123 HTS with increasing distance between the two CuO 2 layers in the active block 23 . It has been explained in terms of a higher effective charge transfer to the CuO 2 layers [68,70].…”

“…Today, NbTi and Nb 3 Sn conductors are the basis of a billion Euro SC wire industry which delivers magnets that cannot be realized by means of conventional metal wire conductors, e. g., for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems and High-Energy Physics (HEP) particle accelerators 7 [1,22,23]. The enormously high critical fields H c2~ 100 T of HTS [24] indicate their potential for extremely high-field applications.…”

“…In a T-A densified model the densified tapes are onedimensional objects along which the J distributions are computed by means of the current density potential T, and its only non-zero component T y , as given in equation (5). The resistivity of the HTS material is defined by means of equations ( 10) and (11). Unlike the H densified strategy, here the critical current density is not modified.…”
