Advances in polymer‐based matte coatings: A review

Abstract: In modern society, polymer-based matte coatings have gained widespread attention for its low gloss and exquisite texture characteristics, which are capable of providing soft-light environmental atmosphere and pleasant tactile feeling. This paper reports the definition of gloss, the measuring method, and classification of gloss, the mechanism, and method of extinction, as well as the factors that affect the gloss of films. The most significant work of this paper focuses on the research advancements in synthesis … Show more

“…It is attributed to the fact that C 2 and C 3 contain more photoinitiator 819DW than C 1 , as a result, more photoinitiators lead to denser wrinkles 44 and higher matting efficiency. 8,45 The gloss value of F 1 is much lower than those of F 2 and F 3 with the incident angle of 85°. The reason is that the height and spacing of wrinkles in F 1 surface are higher than those in F 2 and F 3 (Fig.…”

“…In fact, all of the methods aim to produce a surface that is rough to a certain degree and low gloss. 6,7 For the rst strategy, various matting agents have been widely applied by coating industrial production, 8,9 including diatomite, 10 silica, 11 montmorillonite, 12 and clay. A rough surface is obtained aer the powder is deposited on the surface of the coating.…”

“…The reason may be that the roughness of the coating surface increases with the increase in fluorane microcapsule content in the topcoat. This leads to light scattering, which reduces the gloss of the coated surface [44].…”

“…5 In general, organic or inorganic materials such as silica, titanium dioxide, metallic soaps and waxes have been used as matting agents to induce surface roughness. 6 However, the use of these agents results in viscosity increase and settling problems, which reduces the stability of the emulsion. 7 In addition, incompatibility with resin can degrade the properties of a coating.…”
