Advances in SOI switched capacitors for 4G tunable antennas

Abstract: In order to provide increasing data rates demanded by the consumer market, the 4G RF cellular front-end is becoming increasingly complex with numerous transmit and receive bands, the possibility of multiple antennas and new architectures which involves Uplink and Downlink carrier aggregation. Such new architectures present extreme challenges for conventional fixed band systems composed of PAs, switches and filters. Tunable technologies using RFCMOS SOl technology on high resistivity substrates are already bein… Show more

“…Tunable antennas have a great potential for enhancing the antenna bandwidth while keeping a low profile. MBTCs provides this important feature of tunability to the mobile phone antenna, 4/5G communication antennas, IOTs antenna with low insertion losses, and high quality factor [38,42,43]. The evolution of (4G-LTE) in smartphones resulted in the degradation of voice and data signal quality due to the integration of many electronic components with the antenna [44].…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] In these systems, tunable capacitors are a key component. RF-MEMS tunable capacitors are more suitable for these systems than any other devices such as p-i-n diodes, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) switches, [9][10][11] or barium-strontium-titanate (BST) type tunable capacitors, 12) thanks to their low loss and excellent linearity. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] In order to use a MEMS tunable capacitor in a transmitting system, high-power handling is needed.…”
