Advances in the development of common noise assessment methods in Europe: The CNOSSOS-EU framework for strategic environmental noise mapping

Abstract: The Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC) requires EU Member States to determine the exposure to environmental noise through strategic noise mapping and to elaborate action plans in order to reduce noise pollution, where necessary. A common framework for noise assessment methods (CNOSSOS-EU) has been developed by the European Commission in co-operation with the EU Member States to be applied for strategic noise mapping as required by the Environment Noise Directive (2002/49/EC). CNOSSOS-EU represents a ha… Show more

“…All European Union (EU) Member States are required to determine the exposure to environmental noise and take actions to reduce the noise pollution according to the European Directive on the Assessment and Management of Environmental Noise (2002/49/EC). In addition, EU countries are required to produce noise maps for all major transportation corridors such as major roads, rail, airports, and industry (including port areas if appropriate) on a five-year basis effective from June 2007 [19]. Local authorities use these noise maps to identify priorities for actions to reduce the noise level.…”

“…This has been substantially documented in various studies [2,4,6,12,23,25,[27][28][29][30][31]. Nevertheless, researchers [2,4] suggested a long term monitoring of pavements is required to improve the knowledge in the field.…”

“…Regarding noise mapping, the European Commission has decided to harmonise the methodologies that the Member States need to adopt by introducing CNOSSOS-EU (Common Noise aSSessment MethOdS) (Kephalopoulos et al, 2014). This common method should be fully operational for the next round of EU strategic noise mapping in 2017.…”
