Civil society remains a contested concept, but one that is widely embedded in global development processes. Transnationalism within civil society scholarship is often described dichotomously, either through hierarchical dependency relations or as a more amorphous networked global civil society. These two contrasting spatial imaginaries produce very particular ideas about how transnational relations contribute to civil society. Drawing on empirical material from research with civil society organizations in Barbados and Grenada, in this article I contend that civil society groups use forms of transnational social capital in their work. This does not, however, resonate with the horizontal relations associated with grassroots globalization or vertical chains of dependence. These social relations are imbued with power and agency and are entangled in situated historical, geographical and personal contexts. I conclude that the diverse transnational social relations that are part of civil society activity offer hope and possibilities for continued civil society action in these unexpected spatial arrangements.

This study sought to investigate the features of local NGOs in Ghana and how their current status and challenges influence their potential for partnerships and sustained operation. Cross-sectional survey design was followed and ten health sector NGOs were engaged to respond to questions bordering funding, infrastructure, legalization/registration, and partnerships. Quantitative assessment of data and descriptive statistics was performed. Results showed that 60.0 % of local NGOs lacked funding and 20 % were not legalized/registered. Crosstabulation of data revealed that the lack of funding was explained up to 80.0 % by NGOs' inability to register and legalize their operations. These challenges negatively impacted their ability to secure funding from donors in the health sector and government and as well hindered their partnership potential to a large extent and should be addressed.

Fundraising through poverty porn: Ethical concerns

This study aimed to assess the ethical dilemma in using poverty porn as a means of fundraising by non‐governmental organisations (NGOs) in Ghana. The paper focuses on the ethical concerns from NGOs' perspective as they engage in charitable work to help reduce poverty in society. The study sought to answer the research questions using a qualitative approach by studying some selected NGOs in Ghana, West Africa. In‐depth interviews were used to solicit responses from management members in charge of fundraising in 22 NGOs. The data were analyzed using thematic textual analysis (TTA). From the findings, it became evident that NGOs in their use of poverty porn believed the practice is a better alternative to raise more donations. They feel that the good side of the practice, which is supporting the needy, is more important and outweighs any counterarguments. They believed the end justifies the means. To the best of the researchers' knowledge, this is one of few studies that attempt to focus on the ethical concerns of poverty porn by NGOs.
