Advancing Science and Policy Through a Coordinated International Study of Physical Activity and Built Environments: IPEN Adult Methods

Abstract: Background:National and international strategies to increase physical activity emphasize environmental and policy changes that can have widespread and long-lasting impact. Evidence from multiple countries using comparable methods is required to strengthen the evidence base for such initiatives. Because some environment and policy changes could have generalizable effects and others may depend on each country’s context, only international studies using comparable methods can identify the relevant differences.Met… Show more

“…As part of IPEN, state-of-the-art methods, measures, and instruments were used. 61,77 Overall, findings suggest that diverse, attractive, and walkable neighborhoods can support walking, bicycling, and use of public transit. Public health practitioners and researchers could benefit by utilizing domains and measures from this study for future BE assessments in India and with testing/adaptation, in other LMICs.…”

“…14 In the US, Frank et al 15 pioneered the use of GIS to capture neighbourhood 'walkability' by combining three subcomponent spatial measures: (1) residential density, (2) street connectivity and (3) land use mix. The use and validity of this walkability index have been replicated in studies globally, 16,17 including various studies across many Australian states, including South Australia, 18 Western Australia (WA) [19][20][21] and New South Wales. 22 …”

“…Briefly, IPEN was a multinational study involving 12 countries, with the objective of accurately assessing the strengths of association of built environment features with physical activity levels among adults, using a robust pooled sample from around the world. 27 We took advantage of existing ties to local neighborhoods, the recruitment experience, and the availability of neighborhood-level walkability and socioeconomic status data from IPEN-Mexico to conduct the Nuestra Voz-Mexico pilot study in Cuernavaca.…”
