Advice on chemical weapons sample stability and storage provided by the Scientific Advisory Board of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to increase investigative capabilities worldwide

Abstract: The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has provided advice on the long-term storage and stability of samples collected in the context of chemical weapons investigations. The information they compiled and reviewed is beneficial to all laboratories that carry out analysis of samples related to chemical warfare agents and is described herein. The preparation of this report was undertaken on request from the OPCW Director-General. The main degradation… Show more

“…Amostras são recolhidas para análise fora do estabelecimento e são levadas para laboratórios distintos onde ambos fazem análise às cegas a fim de um confirmar o resultado um do outro. Os testes são realizados para fins de verificação dos agentes, grau de toxidade e quantidades compatíveis com a atividade que deve estar relacionada com os fins pacíficos (TIMPERLEY, 2018).…”

“…95 Trichloronitromethane -or chloropicrin as it results from chlorine or hypochlorous acid reacting with picric acid (2,4,6-trinitrophenol) -is a colourless liquid (boiling point 112 C) having a sweetish odour that is a scheduled chemical under the chemical weapons convention. 96,97 It is a powerful lachrymator and irritant of the respiratory passages and skin, 98 hence its use in battle during the First World War. 99,100 Later, its insecticidal activity was observed, and it was used as a fumigating agent particularly for grain.…”

“…This paper describes the response of the SAB to the Director-General's request, 24 summarising the analysis, results, conclusions, advice given, additional and future considerations, and prospects and recommendations. It follows other advice delivered by the Board [25][26][27][28][29][30] to the Director-General and States Parties, which is intended to strengthen the norm against the use of chemical weapons and to prevent any possibility of their reemergence.…”

“…2 With the OPCW Designated Laboratory network providing an off-site sample analysis capability, the OCAD has served as a database for on-site use, especially for inspections to commercial facilities subject to declaration and inspection as part of the industry verification obligations of States Parties. 25 The OCAD includes analytical data for chemicals relevant to the Convention. The 2018 edition of the database contains mass spectra and retention indices for more than 4400 chemicals, nuclear magnetic resonance spectra for nearly 300 chemicals, and infrared spectra for more than 750 chemicals.…”
