Aerodynamically assisted bio-jets: the development of a novel and direct non-electric field-driven methodology for engineering living organisms

Abstract: We recently demonstrated the ability to use electrified jets under stable conditions for the generation of cell-bearing droplets to the formation of composite threads which are biologically active. Our studies established that processed cells were viable over several generations post-jetting and -threading. These harmless and successful techniques for jet-based cell handling to deployment for precision deposition have great potential and widespread applications in bioengineering and biotechnology. Nonetheless,… Show more

“…Microfluidic flow-focusing systems attract attention as a useful process for fabricating cell-laden small constructs. [12][13][14][15][16] Finally, the core cell-enclosing microparticles were dissolved under mild conditions suitable for mammalian cells to develop hollow-cores resulting in microcapsules. The first microparticles were prepared by extruding cell-suspending polymer solution from a needle of 300 m in diameter into water-immiscible liquid flowing in the same direction in a small tubule.…”

“…The production of monodisperse aerosols using electrospray has been thoroughly studied [52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60] and extensively applied [59,[61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70]. Loscertales [68,72] and the possibility of scale-up using multiple nozzles [72].…”

“…These are, namely, ink-jet printing [4], aerosol delivery [5], very recently pioneered bio-electrosprays [6,7] and aerodynamically assisted bio-jetting [8]. Several other manifestations of the latter two have also been recently reported in the public domain [9][10][11][12]. Ink-jet printing living cells could be said to have initiated this jetting endeavor, which has demonstrated a significant milestone.…”
