Aesthetic Shoulder Augmentation with Silicone Implants

Abstract: When silicone implants are used to achieve purely aesthetic improvements, successful shoulder augmentation procedures are observed. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each submission to which Evidence-Based Medicine rankings are applicable. “…First described by Novack (41) in 1991 and attributed to the cultural emphasis on fitness and bodybuilding during the 1980s, body contouring with soft solid silicone alloplastic implants can be performed in various anatomic locations, such as the pectoralis, calf, gluteal, shoulder, or upper arm musculature (42)(43)(44)(45)(46). Muscular augmentation can be pursued for purely cosmetic reasons or for reconstructive purposes for congenital, neoplastic, or traumatic deformities (Figs 11, 12).…”

“…Complications common to all sites of silicone implantation can occur either early or late and include seroma, hematoma, infection, wound dehiscence, neurovascular injury, implant migration, implant rupture, implant leakage, and capsular contracture (43,45,46,51,52). Neural and vascular structures are injured on the basis of their proximity to the implant: the axillary and/or cephalic veins and axillary nerve for deltoid implants, the short saphenous vein and medial sural cutaneous nerve for calf implants, and the sciatic nerve for gluteal implants (44,45).…”

“…To the Editor, The article by Chung and Jang [1] on shoulder augmentation using silicone implants raises ethical and technical concerns. As doctors, we must understand and appreciate cultural and ethnic differences that influence surgical practice in different parts of the world.…”
